Glass of clean water in natural light.

Why "Clean" Water Isn't Always Better Water

August 04, 20262 min read

We've been trained to think about water in one direction: the cleaner, the better. Purify more, remove more, strip it down until nothing's left but H₂O.

But water was never meant to be empty.

What purification gets right

Good purification does something genuinely important. It removes what you don't want — chlorine, heavy metals, industrial byproducts, the things that have no business in your glass. That part isn't up for debate, and it's the reason paying attention to your water is worth doing at all.

The question was never whether to remove the bad. It's whether "remove everything" is actually the goal.

The part most people miss

The most aggressive approaches to purification don't distinguish between what's harmful and what's helpful. They strip it all. What comes out the other side is technically pure — and nutritionally blank.

Natural water carries dissolved minerals: magnesium, calcium, potassium, trace electrolytes. These aren't contaminants that snuck in. They're part of what water has always been, and part of why spring water feels different from water that's been reduced to nothing.

Magnesium plays a role in muscle function and sleep. Calcium does more than build bone. Electrolytes are what actually carry water into your cells instead of straight through you.

Strip those out, and you've solved one problem while quietly creating another.

Why "hydrating" isn't the same as "drinking water"

Hydration isn't just about volume. It's about whether the water you drink actually reaches your cells — and that depends on minerals and electrolytes being present.

Without them, water moves through your system faster and does less. It's part of why you can drink all day and still feel oddly flat or foggy. The water is clean. It's just not doing much.

A calmer way to think about it

You don't need to overhaul anything tonight. You just need to drop the assumption that emptier means better.

Clean water isn't empty water. It's water that's had the harmful things removed and the good things left alone.

That's the whole idea.
