What's actually in your tap water? (and why it matters)

Before supplements. Before protocols. Before any bio-hack — there's water. 💦
You're about 60% water. Every cell, every system, every process you run on depends on it. And it's the one input you use all day, every day, usually without a second thought. That makes it one of the highest-leverage things you can get right for the long game — and one of the most overlooked.
So let's start where almost no one does: what's actually in your tap water?
"Safe" doesn't mean "optimal"
Here's the key idea most people miss: when your water utility says your water is "safe," that means it's legal — it meets a minimum regulatory standard. It does not mean it's optimal for a body you want to run well for decades. Those are two very different bars.
Municipal water is treated to kill pathogens and hit those legal limits. That's genuinely important — it's why waterborne disease isn't a daily worry. But "meets the minimum" leaves a lot of room.
What's commonly in there
Depending on where you live, your tap water can contain:
Chlorine and chloramine — added on purpose, to disinfect. Necessary at the plant; not something you necessarily want to drink and bathe in daily.
Disinfection byproducts — formed when those disinfectants react with organic matter in the water.
Trace contaminants — depending on your source and pipes: things like lead (from old plumbing), nitrates, PFAS ("forever chemicals"), and pharmaceutical residues have all shown up in testing across the country.
Hardness minerals — not harmful, but they affect taste and how your water feels.
None of this is meant to scare you. It's just awareness— the first step to making a calm, informed choice instead of never thinking about it at all.
Why it matters for longevity
Longevity is a game of small inputs repeated thousands of times. You drink water every day for the rest of your life. If that daily input is cleaner, that's a compounding advantage — quietly, over decades. It's the opposite of a flashy hack: no hype, just a fundamental done right.
What you can actually do
You don't need to panic-buy anything. A calm, practical path:
1. Know your water. Look up your local water quality report (your utility publishes one), or test your home water if you're curious. Awareness first.
2. Purify thoughtfully. The right purification for your water removes what you don't want while keeping it simple. (More on choosing in a future post.)
3. Think about all your water — not just what you drink, but what you shower in, too.
That's it. Not extreme. Not expensive to start. Just intentional.
Your water is the most basic longevity lever there is — and "safe" is a low bar. Getting your water right won't trend on anyone's feed, but it's exactly the kind of quiet, compounding fundamental this whole space is built on.
Start with water. 💦
